Find the shutoffs for all your utilities in your rental and know how to turn them off when an emergency strike’s.
Depending on the type of utility, also place the required tools, like wrenches, screwdrivers or keys in safe place in case that emergency.
Natural Gas
If you have natural gas the shutoff is usually located close to the utility company’s meter, either outside, in the basement of building or in an accessible area of the crawl space. To shut off the gas, you may be required to use a combination or adjustable wrench to turn the valve to the off position.
Electricity
This switch is usually labelled “main”, it can be found on the rental’s electrical service panel, in apartments this is usually located against a primary structural wall but maybe hidden inside a cupboard. For extra safety consider using dry rubber gloves when flipping off the switch.
Water Main
This tap can be almost anywhere in your rental. It is the most commonly used emergency shutoff; it is normally a lone tap placed near one of the water taps. It is not usual for it to be p[laced under cupboard in a apartment, but in house you might even find it outside near the utilities water meter.
